V-Day
No I do not mean the end of the war I mean Valentines Day, the only holiday was it is acceptable to society to give yourself or at least pieces of your self as a gift. But then why is it through out history when people send body parts to one another society says that it is wrong. Take for example the famous Vincent Van Gogh, he sent his ear to his girl friend and they said that he was sick. I’m sure that he would have given her his beating heart or something else of great importance if he thought that he could survive the ordeal. So maybe it wasn’t that he was sick maybe it was just self preservation. Or at Wendy’s maybe the finger in a bowl of chili was just someone sending their love no need for an investigation.
And why the heart of all organs why not the liver or the kidney, its like here is the slippery gooey mess that keeps blood flowing through my body, take it so that you can watch me suffocate my cells from lack of oxygen all over the floor? Oh yeah that’s romantic. At least with an ear you can survive and if by some happens stance you get married you can say “Eeh Carol I didn’t hear you, you want me to sit all day watching football and drinking beer” or “honey you have my ear” and mean it literally.
So maybe we should go back to the beginning of the day in the time of Saint Valentine who as it happens was beheaded for freeing Christians. Maybe that is why vital organs are so prominent for this holiday, because we are celebrating the beheading of a man. While it is understood that this man is to be honored for his saving of a people why has it been commercialized to be the holiday of love, roses, and of course your bleeding heart.
While the holiday has been festooned with flowers and chocolates the heart of the matter remains just that, the heart. So while you celebrate valentines day this year you should think about what you are giving your sweet heart, maybe you should consider instead of giving your heart to him or her you should give your skin and be like “your what holds me together”. Happy Valentines Day
